Francis Cecil Longbourne
Francis Cecil Longbourne was born on 20 June 1883 and was commissioned into the Militia of the Royal West Surrey in April 1902. He served in the Second Boer War and from 1911 to July 1914 in the Mounted Infantry of the West African Frontier Force.
Wounded three times during the Great War, he was wounded severely in October 1914, and awarded the DSO in 1915. He was Brigade Machine Gun Officer, 22 Infantry Brigade from October 1914 to February 1916, and then served as CO of the 2nd Royal West Surrey until September 1917. He was the appointed to command 171 Infantry Brigade which he did until badly wounded in the neck on 5 October 1918 by a Minenwerfer shell.
