Herbert Walter Green

Herbert Walter Green was born on 2 April 1878 at Watford. He was educated at Charterhouse and Exeter College Oxford. He was commissioned in The Buffs in 1900 and served in India where as a keen cricketer (wicketkeeper) he played one first-class match for Europeans (India).

When war broke out he was serving in Nigeria with West African Frontier Force. He arrived in France in 1916, commanding 11th Essex; then 1st Buffs. After commanding 10th Infantry Brigade he commanded 1st West Surrey. Seriously wounded on 7 November 1918 at Landrecies, he died on 31 December 1918 at Rouen following surgery.
